Summary of Case:	"Wrongly convicted in 2005 of wantonly murdering his roommate based on a police officer's expert testimony about blood splatter. On appeal the Kentucky Supreme Court ruled that the officer had not been qualified as a blood splatter expert and should not have been allowed to testify as an expert. The Court ordered an evidentiary hearing to allow expert assessment of the blood evidence. After the hearing the prosecution conceeded that the evidence didn't support that Dougherty deliberately shot his roommate, and that it was likely an accident. In August 2008 Dougherty murder conviction was vacated and it was substituted for manslaughter that he agreed to plead guilty to in exchange for a 10 year sentence. Dougherty was sentenced to 10 years in prison with credit for the four years he had alreadys served."
