Summary of Case: |
"Christophe Drury and Robert Clark were two of five London Metropolitan Police Department officers convicted of corruption charges in 2000. The key witness against the men was Clark's former lover Evelyn Fleckney, who turned police informant after she was convicted in 1998 of drug conspiracy charges and sentenced to 15 years in prison. Clark was sentenced to 12 years in prison and Crury to 11 years. England's Court of Appeals quashed the convictions of the two men based on new evidence that the prosecution had failed to disclose material exculpatory evidence. Their planned retrial abruptly ended on October 19, 2011 after Fleckney testified during a pretrial hearing that she had been pressured by prosecutors to testify against the men in 2000, and that she had never seen them engaged in criminal activity. The Crown Prosecution Service then withdrew the charges against the men on the basis of insufficent evidence, which has the same effect as an acquittal." |
