Summary of Case:

"Reginald Dunk was codefendant of Alexander Schlesinger. Wrongfully convicted of attempting to smuggle 200 Sterling machine-guns to Iraq through Jordan. After his trial in 1985, when he falsely changed his plea to guilty after defense witnesses suddenly refused to testify on his behalf. His conviction was quashed in 1994 after it became known that the British government had pressured the embassies of Iraq and Jordan to deprive Mr. Dunk and Mr. Schlessinger of their witnesses by claiming diplomatic immunity. He was awarded £2.16 million in compensation for his wrongful conviction in June 1999, at the age of 79 when he was suffering from advanced cancer. Dunk was also awarded an additional £150,000 in December 1999 for his costs and damages. Dunk and Schlesinger were both awarded £125,000 in compensation in 1999 by England's Foreign Service. Dunk was awarded total compensation of £2.435 million. Dunk died in April 2000 at 80 years of age."
