Summary of Case:

"Tyler Edmonds was wrongly convicted in July 2004 of murdering his brother-in-law in May 2003, when he was 13, along with his 26-year-old sister Kristi Fulgham, the victim's wife. Because of pretrial publicity his trial was held in Attala County. Tyler Edmonds' conviction was based on his admission to detectives that he participated in the crime -- which he later recanted as coerced -- and the testimony of former Mississippi medical examiner Dr. Steven Hayne’s testimony that he could tell by the bullet wound that two hands had fired the murder weapon. Edmonds was sentenced to life in prison. In January 2007 Tyler Edmonds' conviction was overturned and a new trial ordered by the Mississippi Supreme Court, which ruled the trial judge made prejudicial errors. Edmonds murder retrial was held again in Attala County, and he was acquitted in the fall of 2008. In March 2009 Edmonds and his mother, Sharon Clay, filed a federal civil rights lawsuit against Oktibbeha County and several officials, seeking compensation for his wrongful murder conviction and five years in prison. On November 30, 2010, a judge dismissed the lawsuit. Kristi Fulgham was convicted in late 2007 of murdering her husband and sentenced to death. On November 23, 2010, she was resentenced to life in prison without the possibility of parole."
