Summary of Case: |
"Mohamed El Baladi was wrongly convicted on September 3, 2013 of inciting at least one young Muslim to leave Islam in Ain Aicha, Morocco on August 28, 2013. During El Baladi trial he was not represented by counsel, and after his conviction he was sentenced to 30 months in prison and fined 1,500 Moroccan dirhams (US$182). The fine exceeded the maximum of 500 dirhams (US$60) for a violation of Morocco's “proselytism” law. After a month in custody El Baladi was released on September 26, 2013 in the wake of an international outcry over his conviction. A Moroccan appeals court heard arguments in the case on December 26, 2013, and on February 6, 2014 issued its ruling reversing El Baladi's conviction on the basis of insufficient evidence of his guilt." |
