Summary of Case:	"Peter Greste, Mohamed Fahmy, and Baher Mohammed were codefendants wrongly convicted in August 2015 in Cairo, Egypt of being involved in the broadcasting on Al-Jazeera in 2013 what was described as “false news” and biased coverage against the Egyptian government following the 2013 military ousting of Islamist president Mohammed Morsi. Greste was convicted in absentia since he had been deported in February 2015 to his native Australia. The three were sentenced to three years in prison. Their 2015 convictions were the result of their retrial. Following their arrests in December 2013, the three were convicted on June 23 2014 of being members in the outlawed Muslim Brotherhood, with Greste and Fahmy sentenced to seven years in prison and Mohammed to 10 years. Egypt’s Court of Cassation, the country’s highest appeals court, reversed the convictions on the basis the journalists rights were violated during their trial, and a retrial was ordered. On September 23, 2015 Egyptian President Abdul Fattah al-Sisi pardoned Greste, Fahmy, and Mohammed (also pardoned were about 100 people convicted for illegally publicly protesting the ousting of Morsi.). Fahmy and Mohammed were released in Cairo on Sept. 23 after the pardons were announced. Although there was some confusion at first whether the pardon applied to Greste, it was later clarified by the government that he was also pardoned."
