"Irene Fernandez was wrongly convicted in 2003 of publishing with malicious intent a 1995 memorandum entitled "Abuse, torture and dehumanized treatment of migrant workers at detention camps" in Malaysia. The memorandum was published on August 25, 1995. Dr. Irene Fernandez was sentenced on October 16, 2003 to one year in prison, but she was released on bail pending the outcome of her appeal. On November 24, 2008 the Kuala Lumpur High Court acquitted Fernandez when the government informed the Court that it did not oppose her appeal. Fernandez's case was the longest case in Malaysian legal history. She is the director of the human rights group Tenaganita."
