"John J. Fitzgerald was wrongly convicted on May 18, 1904 of rape in Suffolk County, Massachusetts. John Fitzgerald was convicted based on the testimony of the alleged victim. After his conviction in Superior Court Fitzgerald was sentenced to 3 to 5 years in prison. After Fitzgerald was imprisoned the complainant recanted and informed the police that her testimony was false and no crime was committed. After a post-conviction investigation the Suffolk County District Attorney became satisfied that Fitzgerald was innocent. Upon the recommendation of the District Attorney, Massachusetts Governor William Lewis Douglas granted Fitzgerald a full pardon on November 2, 1904 and he was released from prison."
