Summary of Case: |
"Louise Gadbois was wrongly convicted on June 23, 1884 of commiting adultery in Middlesex County, Massachusetts. After her conviction in the Middlesex County Superior Court, Gadbois was sentenced to one year in prison. An investigation by Officer Bean discovered that she had been driven from her home by her husband's harsh treatment, and that he divorced her. Consequently, she didn't commit adultery, and the district attorney and the judge had erroneously been misled that she was a woman of immoral character. On October 1, 1884 Louise Gadbois was granted a full pardon by Massachusetts Governor George D. Robinson based on the recommendation of the Middlesex County District Attorney." |
