Summary of Case:	"Three codefendants were wrongly convicted of contempt of court on November 14, 1941 for an editorial comment printed in the Hindustan Times newspaper in Allahabad, India that criticized the Chief Justice of the Allahabad High Court, Sir Iqbal Ahmed, for calling upon judicial officers to collect money for the war fund. The codefendants were Devadas Gandhi, Editor of the Hindustan Times; Devi Prasad Sharma, Publisher of the Hindustan Times; and, R L. Singhal, Hindustan Times correspondent in Meerut, India. Gandhi and Sharma were sentenced to fines of Rs. 1,000 and Rs. 500, respectively, or one month's imprisonment in default. They were also ordered to pay costs of prosecution of Rs. 480 each. Singhal was sentenced to two months' imprisonment, and he began serving his sentence on November 28, 1941. As a British Commenwealth the final court of appeal for the three was the Privy Council in London. In June 1942 the Privy Council quashed the convictions of the three codefendants and ordered the return of all fines and court costs paid."
