Summary of Case:

"Karl Gardner was wrongly convicted in April 2014 of the aggravated assault of a woman during an invasion of her home in Albrighton, England in May 2009. The prosecution's case was based on the testimony of a prosecution expert that Gardner's fingerprint was found on the outside door frame of the house. The woman, her husband, their son who was 12 at the time of the home invasion did not identify Gardner as their assailant. Gardner testified in his defense that he had worked on several properties around Albrighton about the time the home was invaded, but he did not do the cime and he had never been to the house. Gardner testified, "“This is a mistake, I should not be here. I have no idea how my fingerprint got there. I do not recall being in that house.” Gardner was acquitted by the jury of aggravated burglary and assaulting the husband with a hammer. In July 2014 the Criminal Court of Appeal quashed Gardner's conviction as unsafe because the jury's verdicts were fundamentally illogical and inconsistent with his guilt. The appeals court stated in its ruling, "In the circumstances of the present case, we cannot be satisfied that this conviction is safe and the appeal is therefore allowed.""
