Summary of Case: |
"Wrongly convicted in 2001 of the April 1999 murder of 37-year-old British television personality Jill Dando. Barry George was sentenced to life in prison and his conviction was upheld in 2002. Based on two new witnesses and new medical evidence, in June 2007 the UK's Criminal Case Review Commission submitted his case for review by the Court of Appeal. In November 2007 his conviction was quashed and a retrial ordered by the Court of Appeals. He was released on bail pending his retrial. George's retrial began on June 9, 2008, and he was then acquitted on August 1, 2008. On February 22, 2009 The Sunday Times (of London) reported that Scotland Yard was investigating credible reports that Dando was killed by a Serbian hitman in retaliation for NATO's bombing of Belgrade in early 1999." |
