Summary of Case:

"Mel Gibson was convicted on March 11, 2011 of misdemeanor domestic battery for allegedly striking his girlfriend and mother of one of his children, Oksana Grigorieva, in the mouth and threatening him with a gun in January 2010 at his home in Malibu, California. Grigorieva didn't report the alleged incident to authorities for months, and when she did Gibson said it never happened. Although Gibson maintained his innocence, he agreed to a plea of no contest for what he said was the sake of his family. Gibson was sentenced to 3 years probation, 16 hours of community service, and 52 weeks of counseling. After Gibson's sentence had been completed his lawyer filed a motion to withdraw Gibson's no-contest plea and to dismiss the charge. On May 12, 2014 Los Angles Superior Court Judge Deborah Brazil allowed Mel Gibson to withdraw his March 2011 plea of no contest to domestic battery, and she ordered the charge dismissed. Gibson is one of the world's most well-known movie stars."
