Summary of Case: |
"Clarence Earl Gideon was wrongly convicted on August 4, 1961 of felony theft at a Panama City, Florida pool hall where $5 was stolen during a burglary. On March 18, 1963 the U.S. Supreme Court reversed the conviction of Clarence Gideon based on the state's failure to provide him with counsel. On August 5, 1963 Gideon was acquitted after a retrial when his appointed counsel was able to demonstrate that the state's witness was not only lying, but may have participated in the burglary himself. Clarence Gideon's counsel was also able to show that there were innocent explanations for the state's circumstantial "evidence" that made him appear guilty." |
