Pardoned Posthumously After Execution |
Summary of Case: |
"Peter Goggins was wrongly convicted of deserting his post on November 26, 1916 while serving in the British Army in France on the Western Front. Goggins' defense was he had been ordered by a superior to retreat 20 yards to a different position. Goggins was convicted by a military court martial and sentenced to death. Although Brigadier-General H O'Donnell wrote that he had doubts about the quality of the evidence, he thought the conviction and execution of Goggins (and two other soldiers) was necessary to maintain discipline and set an example to other men in the battalion. Goggins and the other two men were executed on January 18, 1917. Goggins was symbolicaly pardoned on Oct. 31, 2006." |
