"Hayes Van Gorder was wrongly convicted in 1924 in federal court of stealing the keys for two U. S. Post Office box keys in Poplar Bluff, Missouri that he used to open the boxes on January 17, 1924. After his conviction by a jury Hayes Gorder was sentenced to serve five years in federal prison and pay a fine of $100. Gorder appealed. On October 5, 1927 the United States Eighth Circuit Court of Appeals reversed Gorder's conviction on the basis the prosecution failed to introduce sufficient evidence to prove his guilt beyond a reasonable doubt."
