Summary of Case: |
"David A Gray was wrongly convicted in 1978 of attempted murder, rape and robbery in Madison County, Illinois after his second trial based on eyewitness error by the victim who was stabbed 33 times, and the perjured testimony by a "jailhouse snitch." Gray's first trial ended in a hung jury. The jury convicted Gray although no physical or forensic evidence tied him to the crime and he had credible alibi witnesses. Gray's conviction was overturned based on DNA evidence unavailable at the time of his trial, and after the charges were dismissed he was released on January 26, 1999 after 20 years and 10 months in custody. On May 2, 2002 Illinois Governor George Ryan granted executive clemency to Gray. On May 6, 2003 the Illinois Court of Claims approved Gray to receive $143,578.05 in compensation." |
