Summary of Case:	"Kevin Lee Green was wrongly convicted in 1980 of second-degree murder and attempted murder for the assault of his wife that resulted in the death of his unborn child in 1979 in Orange County, California. The child's death was caused by his pregnant wife being hit during an assault. The only evidence against Green was the testimony of his wife, who was knocked unconscious by her attacker. Kevin Green was sentenced to 15 years to life in prison. Green consistently maintained his innocence. In June 1996 Green was informed that Marine Sergeant Gerald Parker had confessed to the crimes Green had been convicted of, and that his confession was corroborated by DNA testing of crime scene evidence unavailable at the time of Green's trial that matched Parker's DNA profile. Green filed a writ of habeas corpus based on the new evidence which was granted, and he was released after 16 years of incarceration. Green was awarded $10,000 by the State of California on March 18, 1997, which was the maximum compensation then available under state law. The law was amended and Green was awarded $620,000 in October 1999 by California's legislature for his 16 years of wrongful imprisonment. Gerald Parker was convicted of murder in October 1998."
