Summary of Case:

"Nissim Haddad was wrongly convicted in 2013 of sexually assaulting his then-girlfriend's 18 month old child in Tel Aviv, Israel. Haddad's prosecution was based on the circumstantial evidence that he caused bleeding by the child after he was alone with the child in an exercise room. Haddad had been watching the child while his girlfriend was getting ready for the three of them to go to a restaurant for dinner, and when she saw them Haddad was changing the child's diaper that had blood in it. Haddad claimed that the child caused the bleeding, but doctors testified that wasn't possible. After his conviction in the Tel Aviv District Court Haddad was sentenced to 17 years in prison. Haddad appealed. On September 6, 2016 the Israel Supreme Court in a majority ruling overturned Haddad's conviction and ordered his acquittal based on insufficient evidence to prove his guilt beyond a reasonable doubt. In announcing the ruling Supreme Court Justice Salim Joubran said: “There is no direct proof connecting the appellant to the act of sodomy that has been attributed to him. His conviction in the ruling of the District Court is based on a tapestry of indirect evidence.”"
