Summary of Case:

"James A. Haley was wrongly convicted in March 1972 of a July 11, 1971 murder committed in Dorchester, Massachusetts. Haley's prosecution was based primarily on the testimony of two witnesses. James Haley was sentenced to life in prison. In 2006 Haley obtained prosecution documents through a Freedom of Information request that showed the two witnesses initially told police they hadn't seen Haley for more than a month. Based on the new evidence Haley filed a state motion for a new trial. After it was denied he filed a federal write of habeas corpus. A federal judge granted his writ of habeas corpus and he was released on bail in January 2008 after his conviction was overturned and a new trial ordered. Haley's indictment was dismissed in August 2008. In February 2009 Haley filed a federal civil rights lawsuit against the City of Boston and several police officers. James Haley settled his lawsuit in 2013 for $3 million from the city of Boston."
