Summary of Case: |
"Chevanese Sasha Gaye Hall was wrongly convicted in March 2014 of four counts of trafficking in persons and two counts of withholding identification papers in January 2013. Chevanese Hall was tried in Freeport, Grand Bahama, The Bahamas. After her convictions Hall, a Jamaican citizen, was sentenced on June 25, 2014 to a total of 15 years in prison (Concurrent sentences of 15 years in prison for human trafficking, and 10 and 7 years in prison for her identification papers convictions.). Hall appealed. On January 21, 2016 the Bahamas' Court of Appeal quashed Hall's conviction's on the basis the trial court lacked jurisdiction because Hall was not "charged before a Magistrate's court with an "indictable offence." The Bahamian government appealed to the U.K.'s Privy Council -- which is the final judicial authroity for the Bahamas. On October 17, 2016 the Privy Council affirmed the ruling of the Bahamas' Court of Appeals." |
