"Derrick Hamilton was wrongly convicted in 1993 of murder in the shooting death of a man on a Brooklyn, New York street in 1991. Hamilton was sentenced to 20 years to life in prison. Hamilton's trial lawyer failed to present evidence proving that at the time of the crime he was 81 miles away in New Haven, Connecticut. A motion to dismiss the charges filed by the Kings County District Attorney's Office was granted on January 9, 2015. On January 20, 2015 Hamilton filed a notice of his intent to sue the City of New York, the New York Police Department, and detective Louis Scarcella for $100 million in compensation"
