Summary of Case:	"Frank Hammons and his son Robert M. Hammons were wrongly convicted in 1986 of armed robbery in the theft of narcotics from a pharmacy in Slidell, Louisiana on July 23, 1984. The prosecution's case was based on an eyewitness. After his conviction by a jury the judge granted Frank Hammons' motion for a judgment of acquittal based on the prosecution's failure to introduce sufficient evidence to prove his guilt beyond a reasonable doubt. Robert Hammons was sentenced to 40 years in prison without the possibility of parole. The trial judge denied Hammons post-verdict motion for a new trial based on new evidence. In 1988 the Louisiana Court of Appeals reversed the judges ruling on the basis he applied the wrong legal standard. On remand the judge again denied Hammons motion, and the Court of Appeals affirmed that ruling. Hammons appealed, and in April 1992 the Louisiana Supreme Court granted Hammons motion and ordered a new trial. The Supreme Court noted that Hammons had 12 alibi witnesses who would provided new evidence he was in Pritchard, Alabama -- 118 miles away -- before, during and after the robbery in Slidell. "
