Summary of Case:

"Wrongly convicted in 1989 of the 1987 knife assault of a 15-year-old based on the eyewitness identification by the girl's mother. Nineteen-year-old Anthony Hanemaayer had been working as a roofer in the neighborhood where the girl lived. Under pressure of being given a stiffer sentence after conviction by the jury, Anthony Hanemaayer changed his plea to guilt in the middle of his trial. He was sentenced to two years in prison instead of the 6 to 10 years he would have been given after a jury verdict. In 2006 serial killer and rapist Paul Bernardo confessed to authorities that he committed the crime that Hanemaayer had been convicted of committing. However, the police did not inform Hanemaayer of that new evidence. A year later, in 2007 lawyer James Lockyer with the Association in Defence of the Wrongly Convicted learned about Bernardo's confession while researching another case. Based on the new evidence casting doubt on his guilt, AIDWYC filed a petition for a new trial, and the Ontario Court of Appeal reversed Hanemaayer's conviction in June 2008."
