Summary of Case:	"Loren Ronald Hanson was wrongly convicted in 2005 of manufacturing marijuana in Colfax, Washington. Hanson's prosecution was based on discovery of 34 marijuna plants during execution of a search warrant on his motel on August 24, 2004. Loren Hanson admitted he grew the marijuana, but that he did so under his physician's authorization. Hanson waived his right to a jury trial. During his bench trial the judge denied Hanson's affirmative defense that he was legally allowed to grow the marijuana with his physician's authorization as allowed by Washington State Law, because the authorization was not at the motel at the time of the raid. After he was found guilty, Hanson appealed. On May 1, 2007 the Washington Court of Appeals in a 2 to 1 majority decision, reversed Hanson's conviction in ruling: "We will not read an affirmative defense (medical use) as inconsistent with the state's interest in regulating the use of the drug, particularly when the specific legislative intent is to the contrary. ... We reverse the conviction and dismiss the prosecution.""
