Summary of Case:	"Michael Wayne Hash was wrongly convicted in 2001 of the murder of 74-year-old Thelma D. Scroggins in 1996 in Culpeper County, Virginia. Hash was charged with the crime in 1999. After his conviction by a jury he was sentenced to life in prison without the possibility of parole. Hash filed a state post-conviction petition seeking a new trial based on new evidence his conviction ws the result of police and prosecutor misconduct. After Virginia state court's denied Hash's petition, he filed a federal writ of habeas corpus that was granted in 2012 and his conviction was overturned by U.S. District Judge James Turk. The prosecution declined to retry Hash and he was released after 13 years of incarceration. Hash filed a federal civil rights lawsuit against a number of defendants that included the Culpeper County sheriff. Hash and Culpeper County agreed on a settlement, and Hash's lawsuit was dismissed on July 1, 2014."
