"Stephen H. Haugh was wrongly convicted in 1968 of descrecating the American flag during a political demonstation at the University of Pennsylvania at State College, Pennsylvania on July 4, 1967. The flag had written on it, "Make love not war," and, "The new American revolutionaries." Haugh's conviction was affirmed by the Superior Court in 1969. On July 2, 1970 the Pennsylvania Supreme Court unanimously vacated Haugh's conviction on the basis the flag desecration law didn't apply to Haugh's conduct, because "Haugh was obviously participating in a demonstration concerning a political issue.""
