Summary of Case:

"James Hill and Larry Mayes were codefendants wrongly convicted of rape, robbery, and kidnapping in Hammond, Indiana. Hill was sentenced to 35 years in prison. Mayes was sentenced to 80 years in prison. Mayes served 2-1/2 years pre-trial and 18-1/2 years of sentence before being exonerated by DNA test of physical evidence excluded Larry Mayes as the attacker. After his 2001 release, Mayes filed a $19 million federal civil rights lawsuit against the city of Hammond, Indiana and its police department. On August 22, 2006, a jury awarded him $9 million dollars and the defendant's appealed. In September 2008 Mayes agreed to $4.5 million in exchange for ending the city's appeal. After his exoneration in 2009 Hill filed a federal civil rights lawsuit against the city of Hammond and its police department. In September 2016 a settlement conference was postponed after Hill was arrested on a murder charge. The city announced that it will not settle the lawsuit while his murder charges are pending."
