Summary of Case:

"Réjean Hinse was wrongly convicted in 1964 of a 1961 armed robbery committed in Mont-Laurier, Québec. Hinse's alibi defense the jury rejected was that at the time of the crime he was in Montreal 148 miles (238 km) from Mont-Laurier. Hinse was sentenced to 15 years in prison and released on parole in 1969 after serving 5 years. Hinse was acquitted by the Supreme Court of Canada in 1997 after an extension of time for filing an appeal was granted. It was announced on April 14, 2011 that Hinse was awarded compensation of $CAN8.6 million by the Canadian government. It was announced at the same time that he was also awarded compensation of CAN4.5 million by the Province of Quebec. The total award of $CAN13.1 million equals $13,609,333 at the conversion rate of $US1.0388803563 per CAN$."
