Summary of Case:

"Larry R. Holdsworth was wrongly convicted on November 8, 1988 of aggravated robbery in Portage County, Ohio. The crime occurred on September 7, 1982. Holdsworth proseuction was based on the testimony of a jailhouse snitch. After his conviction Holdsworth was sentenced to 4 to 25 years in prison. On February 21, 1992 Holdsworth's conviction was overturned by the Ohio Court of Appeals on the basis the prosecution introduced insufficient evidence to prove his guilt beyond a reasonable doubt. After his exoneration Larry Holdsworth filed an action for wrongful imprisonment in state court in April 1992 that was resolved in February 1994. That action was morphed into a claim for wrongful imprisonment with the State of Ohio Court of Claims that Holdsworth filed on June 17, 1994. On December 14, 1994 Holdsworth was awarded compensation of $88,000. On February 3, 1995 Holdsworth filed a federal civil rights (42 U.S.C.,§ 1983) lawsuit that named as defendants several officers involved in his prosecution. The U.S. District Court judge granted the defendants motion for summary judgment on the basis Holdworth lawsuit was barred by the two year statute of limitations for filing a § 1983 lawsuit in Ohio. The judge rejected Holdsworth's argument that the statute of limitations didn't begin until he resolved his state court action in February 1994, and not February 24, 1992 when his conviction was overturned."
