Summary of Case:

"Taquala Monique Howse was wrongly convicted in Waterloo, Iowa on December 5, 2013 of carrying a dangerous weapon. Howse was arrested on June 23, 2013 as suspected of shoplifting at a WalMart store in Waterloo, and a stun gun was found in her purse. She was charged with two misdemeanors: fifth-degree theft and possessing a dangerous weapon. Howse pled guilty to the theft (shoplifting) charge and was sentenced to make restitution to WalMart. She pled not guilty to carrying a dangerous weapon. After a bench trial in Black Hawk County District Court the judge found Howse guilty of carrying a dangerous weapon -- even though one police officer testified he didn't test the device to see if it worked, and another police officer testified he tried but failed to get it to work. Howse appealed her conviction of carrying a dangerous weapon. On March 11, 2015 Taquala Howse' conviction was vacated by the Iowa Court of Appeals based on insufficient evidence the stun gun she possessed was a dangerous weapon under Iowa law."
