"Robert Hubert was a French watchmaker wrongly accused, convicted and executed for starting the Great Fire of London that lasted four days from Sept. 2 to 6, 1666. He falsely confessed after being tortured into confessing. He was executed at the Tyburn gallows. Several "years later a Swedish ship's captain testified that he had landed the watchmaker [Robert Hubert] ashore two days after the fire had started." ("When London Started Over," Simon Winchester, The NY Times Book Review, 9-22-02, p 17) Hubert was exonerated approximately in 1670."
