Summary of Case:

"Bruce Allen Hummel was twoce wrongly convicted of first-degree murder in the disappearance of his wife Alice Hummel on October 18, 1990 in Bellingham, Washington and her presumed death. His first conviction was in August 2009, and his second was in May 2014. Alice's body was never found. Almost 18 years after Alice disappeared, Hummel was charged with first-degree murder on July 30, 2008. The prosecution's key evidence was jailhouse informant Donald Cargill, who testified that he shared a cell with Hummel in the Whatcom County Jail. Cargill testified that Hummel tod him "that he had helped his wife Alice 'get toa better place' by mixing a handful of ground up pills in apple cider and giving it to Alice to drink." The jury convicted Hummel of first-degree murder in August 2009, and he was sentenced to 45 years in prison. Hummel appealed, and the Washington Court of Appeals reversed his conviction and ordered a new trial based on the trial judge's violation of his constitutional right to a public trial. During Hummel's retrial in May 2014 the prosecution didn't present Cargill as a witness. Hummel was again convicted by a jury of first-degree murder, and he was sentenced to 26 years in prison. Hummel appealed. On October 19, 2016 the Washington Court of Appeals reversed Bruce Hummel's conviction based on insufficient evidence to prove the essestial element of premeditation, and ordering dismissal of his indictment with prejudice."
