Summary of Case:

"Tyeona Hunter was wrongly convicted in 1994 of felony sexual penetration of her then three-year-old daughter in 1993 in Hamilton County, Ohio. After her conviction following a bench trial, Hunter was sentenced to 10 to 25 years in prison. On direct appeal, on December 26, 2017 the Hamilton County, 1st District Court of Appeals reversed her conviction and ordered the charges dismissed on the basis the prosecution failed to introduce sufficient trial evidence to prove she was guilty beyond a reasonable doubt -- stating that "at best" the expert testimony the prosecution relied on was "conjecture based on speculation." The State appealed the ruling to the Ohio Supreme Court, which declined jurisdiction and dismissed the appeal on April 22, 1998. Hunter filed a wrongful imprisonment claim with the State of Ohio on April 9, 1999, and on February 5, 2001 she was awarded $93,708 in compensation."
