Summary of Case: |
"Mr. Huugjilt (aka Hugejiletu, aka Hugijiltu, aka Hugjiltu, aka Qo?siletu) was wrongly convicted in 1996 of raping and fatally choking a woman in a toilet at a textile factory in Hohhot, capital of China's Inner Mongolia autonomous region, on April 9, 1996. Huugjilt defense was he had tried to help save the woman after hearing her cry out from a toilet, and he was wrongly charged with the crime after he reported it to the police. Huugjilt appealed his conviction and sentence, but he was again convicted and sentenced to death after a trial in the appeals court. The 18-year-old Huugjilt, a member of the Mongolian ethnic group, was executed on June 8, 1996 -- just 61 days after the crime was committed. Nine years later serial rapist and murderer Zhai Zhihong confessed to the crime after he was arrested in 2005. On Nov 20, 2014 the Inner Mongolia High People's Court decided to retry the case. On December 15, 2014 Huugjilt was acquitted by the Inner Mongolia High People's Court based on the new evidence of a confession by the actual perpetrator. Huugjilt's family was paid interim compensation of $4,500 (30,000 yuan) on December 15, 2014. Fifteen days later the High Court ruled on December 30, 2014 that the family would be awarded total compensation of $322,000 (2.06 million yuan), On January 20, 2015 Huugjilt's parents submitted a report disclosing their intention to sue all staff involved in their son's case, including the police officers handling the murder and rape case, prosecutors filing the charges against Huugjilt, and judges and court clerks of the first and second trials. In 2015 Zhai Zhihong was convicted and sentenced to death for the rape and murder Huugjilt had been convicted of committing." |
