"Anwar Ibrahim was wrongly convicted in 1999 of committing sodomy and he was sentenced to nine years imprisonment in Malaysia. Ibrahim was arrested on September 20, 1998 and detained without trial under Malaysia's Internal Security Act (ISA). Ibrahim was a member of the Malaysian Cabinet when the allegations surfaced in 1998. In September 2004 Ibrahim's sodomy conviction was quashed by Malaysia's Supreme Court and he was released from prison on September 2, 2004. Ibrahim had been held in solitary confinement."
