Summary of Case:

"Meriam Yehya Ibrahim was wrongly convicted on May 11, 2014 in Khartoum, Sudan of apostasy for renuncing her Muslim faith for Christianity, for which she was sentenced on May 15 to death by hanging, and of adultery for marrying a Christian man, which which she was sentenced to receive 100 lashes. Ibrahim's father was Muslim, so under Muslim law she was considered to be a Muslim and therefore her marriage to a Christian was void. At the time of her conviction Ibrahim was eight months pregnant at the time of her conviction, and she gave birth to a girl in prison two weeks after her sentencing. Also in prison with her was her 20-month-old son. After her conviction the judge gave Ibrahim several days to renounce Christianity, but at the time of her sentencing she told the judge "I am a Christian," after which she was sentenced to death by hanging. On June 23, 2014 a Sudanese appeals court overturned Ibrahim's conviction on the basis it was legally faulty, and she was released later that day. Ibrahim's Christian husband Daniel Wani is wheelchair bound and depended on his wife for his care."
