Summary of Case:	"Alberto Ical was wrongly convicted on February 29, 2016 of raping and robbing a woman in Belmopan, Belize on March 11, 2011. Ical's prosecution was based on the woman's identification of him from an identity parade. Ical insisted he was innocent and had been misidentified. After his conviction in the Central District of the Supreme Court in Belmopan, Ical was sentenced on March 11, 2016 to 25 years in prison. Ical appealed. On June 12, 2017 the Belize Court of Appeals set-aside Ical's conviction and ordered his acquittal on the basis the trial judge erred and interfered with Ical's defense by failing to allow Ical to cross-examine the complainant after she mentioned in her testimony that she had seen photos of Ical at the police station prior to her identifying him, and thus the appeals court ruled her identification of him was too tainted to be reliable. Ical was not released from prison, because he is serving 15 years in prison for two rape convictions in 2013: he was sentenced to concurrent 10 and 15 years sentences, so he is scheduled for release in 2028."
