Summary of Case:

"Prentiss Ashon Jackson was wrongly convicted in June 2012 of failing to update his registration information as a sex offender within 72 hours prior to changing his address from Houston County, Georgia to Bibb County, Georgia. The trial judge denied the oral motion by Jackson's lawyer during trial to direct a verdict in Jackson's favor because "the indictment was defective because it failed to allege that Jackson was a convicted sex offender and that he was required to register under the statute." After his conviction by a jury Prentiss Jackson was sentenced to serve six years in prison without the possibility of paole and to serve 24 years on probation. The Georgia Court of Appeals affirmed Jackson's conviction. The Georgia Supreme Court accepted discretionary review of Jackson's case. On May 15, 2017 the Georgia Supreme Court reversed Jackson's conviction based on a defective indictment that didn't state all essential elements of failure to register a change of address."
