"Sergeant Jackson was wrongly convicted in 1974 of first-degree murder and first-degree robbery based on the erroneous belief that he possessed the wallet of the victim. After his conviction by a jury Jackson was sentenced to life in prison. In overturning his conviction in 1975, he was described by the Californa Court of Appeals as "an innocent man, convicted and imprisoned for crimes he did not commit." (MJ, 129) The City of San Diego paid Jackson compensation of $17,000. "
