Summary of Case:

"Mick Jagger, lead singer of the rock group The Rolling Stones, was wrongly convicted in June 1967 of possessing amphetamine tablets without a prescription and sentenced to four months in prison at hard labor. Jagger was convicted even though there was credible evidence that the tablets allegedly found in his possession had been prescribed to him. Jagger's conviction was related to the same party at fellow Rolling Stones member Keith Richards' home that resulted in Richards' conviction of allowing drug use in his home and sentenced to one year in prison at hard labor. The Times (of London) published an Editorial on July 1, 1967, written by editor William Rees-Mogg under the title, "Who Breaks A Butterfly On A Wheel." The public outrage over the conviction and sentences of the two is believed to have contributed to the quashing of Jagger and Richards' conviction. It was learned that the raid was the result of a tip to the London Drug Squad by reporters for the News Of The World, which was running a series of stories about the alleged use of illegal drugs by British rock stars. (News of the World was owned by Rupert Murdoch)'Jagger having credible evidence that the tablets allegedly found in his possession had been prescribed to him, both were found guilty."
