Summary of Case:	"Jefferson Jean-Baptiste was wrongly convicted in 2016 of the Class A misdemeanor of resisting arest on April 5, 2016 in Marion County, Indiana. The trial judge held a bench trial without obtaining a waiver of a jury trial from Jean-Baptiste. After he was found guilty Jean-Baptiste appealed. On February 24, 2017 the Indiana Court of Appeals reversed Jean-Baptiste's conviction on the basis the prosecution introduced insufficient evidence to prove his guilt beyond a reasonable doubt. The appeals court also ruled that Jean-Baptiste's conviction would have had to be reversed, and a new trial granted, even if there had been sufficient evidence, because the trial judge committed the fundamental error of failing to obtain a waiver of his right to a jury trial."
