Summary of Case: |
"Sion Jenkins was wrongly convicted in 1998 of murdering his 13-year-old foster daughter in 1997. Jenkins was sentenced to life in prison. His conviction was quashed in 2004 and his retrial ordered. Jenkins was released on bail after six years imprisonment. In 2005 a jury deadlocked after his retrial. A second retrial ended on February 9, 2006, with the jury deadlocked after eight days of deliberations. The government announced they would dismiss the charges and he was formally acquitted. Jenkins announced that he would be filing a lawsuit for compensation for the six years he was imprisoned. It is estimated the British government spent £10 million pursuing Sion Jenkins prosecution. In August 2010 it was announced that Jenkins would not receive any compensation under England's wrongful conviction compensation law because he was acquitted after his trial, and not declared innocent by a court." |
