"Joshua “Ben” Jeyaretnam (aka J. B. Jeyaretnam) was wrongly convicted of perjury in 1986 in Singapore. Jeyaretnam was sentenced to month in jail and a fine. Jeyaretnam, a lawyer, was also was disbarred from legal practicing law. After his conviction was affirmed by Singapore's courts, Jeyaretnam appealed to the Privy Council in London. In 1988 the Privy Court overturned Jeyaretnam's conviction and disbarment in ruling he was the victim of a “grievous injustice." Singapore, a former British colony, subsequently abolished the right of final appeal to the Privy Council. "
