Summary of Case:

"Li Jiangong was wrongly convicted in July 2008 of murder in the death of 75-year-old Cao Juying in December 2007 in China's Xinjiang Province. Juying's body was found in a toilet cesspit. Her mouth had been sealed with adhesive tape and she had head injuries consistent with being hit by a blunt instrument. The police determined that a neighbor of Juying likely committed the crime. Six days after her body was found police arrested Jiangong -- who was a neighbor of Juying. There was an absence of physical evidence linking him to the crime, or evidence they were even acquainted, but he confessed during a police interrogation. After his conviction Jiangong was sentenced to death, but it was suspended to life in prison. In November 2008 the High Court in Xinjiang affirmed his conviction and sentence. Jiangong's family campaigned on his behalf and in December 2018 a retrial was ordered by the Xinjiang High Court based on insubstantial and insufficient of his guilt. After his retrial, on December 4, 2019 Jiangong was acquitted by the Xinjiang Construction and Production Corps Second Division's Intermediate People's Court. The court ruled there was a lack of evidence proving Jiangong's guilt, there was no motive for him to have committed the crime, and the prosecution didn't identify where the crime had been committed or the murder weapon. The 51-year-old Jiangong was released after 12 years in custody. After his release, Jiangong's sister Li Cuihong told the South China Morning Post newspaper: "We will seek state compensation and will hold the officials who made the wrong verdict accountable.""
