Summary of Case:

"Wesley Floyd John was wrongly convicted on October 10, 2017 of multiples crimes in Red Deer, Alberta, Canada. After his trial presided over by Provincial Court Judge J. D. Holmes, Wesley John appealed. The Court of Appeal of Alberta held a hearing on June 7, 2018. On June 13, 2018 the appeals court ruled the evidence didn't support John's convictions, and ordered his acquittal. The Court's ruling was a brief 50 words, and stated: "The unanimous decision of the court is as follows. We have examined this case very closely and pursuant to section 686(1)(a) of the Criminal Code of Canada, have concluded that on this record, the convictions are unreasonable and cannot be supported. The convictions are therefore quashed and acquittals substituted therefor." (R v John, 2018 ABCA 217). The Court's three-line ruling that didn't elaborate on its reasoning raised some eyebrows. Ian Burns wrote an article published in The Lawyer's Daily (Canada) that was titled: "Three-line Appeal Court decision ‘makes Reader’s Digest look downright loquacious’: lawyer.""
