Summary of Case:

"Clayton Johnson was wrongly convicted in 1993 of first-degree murder in the death of his wife on February 20, 1989 at their home in Halifax, Nova Scotia. His wife's death had initially been considered an accident from her falling down a flight of stairs, but when Johnson collected $125,000 in life insurance and married a 22-year-old woman, he became the object of a murder investigation. After his conviction by a jury Johnson was sentenced to 25 years in prison before being eligible for parole. He was released from prison on September 25, 1998 on bail based on new evidence his wife had died from head injuries suffered in her fall down the stairs. Johnson's conviction was quashed by the Nova Scotia Court of Appeals on Feb. 18, 2002 and the court acceded to the prosecution's request that Johnson be acquitted. Johnson filed suit to recover damages for his wrongful conviction and imprisonment, and on June 18, 2004 he reached a settlement of CAN$2.5 million."
