Summary of Case: |
"Emma Jo Johnson was wrongly convicted in Las Vegas, Nevada of second-degree murder in April 1951 by a jury. The victim was determined to have died from a blood clot and the prosecution argued it was caused by a hair-pulling spat Johnson had with the victim shortly before she died. Johnson was sentenced to 10-to-12 years in prison. After her imprisonment Johnson discovered that the day before their spat the victim had been diagnosed with a blood clot that could cause her death at any time. Based on the new evidence the victim died from natural causes Johnson's petition for a pardon was granted in January 1954 and she was released after 2 years and 9 months of wrongful imprisonment for a crime that didn't occur. Emma Johnson was not granted compensation. " |
