On April 5, 2019 Nigeria's Supreme Court ruled there was insufficient evidence of Kanu's guilt and ordered his acquittal and release from prison. Kanu announced in late April 2019 that he would be suing the Nigerian government for N20bn (US$55,633,584) in compensation for his wrongful conviction and incarceration.
