Summary of Case: |
"Nikhil Dey, Norti Bai, Ram Karan and Chotu Lal were codefendants wrongly convicted in June 2017 of violating IPC Sections 323 (voluntarily causing hurt) and IPC Sections 451 (house trespass) in May 6, 1998 in the village of Harmara, in India's state of Rajasthan. Their prosecution was based on the allegation that they engaged in violence when they went to the home of Harmara village sarpanch Pyare Lal Tank to deliver a letter complaining about corruption by Tank (who was a government official) that included people being cheated of payments for house construction and other schemes of the government. Their defense was that Tank got violent and abusive with them, and they reported to the police that they had been assaulted when trying to deliver the letter. After their conviction they were sentenced to four months in jail. They appealed. They complainants then withdrew their case. On August 3, 2017 the court of the Additional District Judge, Kishangarh quashed their convictions and ordered their acquittals because their was no longer a case for them to answer to. " |
